PGL Environmental Consultants (PGL) is seeking an experienced Risk Assessor with demonstrated expertise in human health and ecological risk assessments (HH/Eco RAs) for contaminated sites. We offer a flexible 37.5-hour work week, with the option to work from home or from any of our offices in Vancouver, Langley, Victoria, Calgary, or Whitby.

This is an intermediate to senior technical role involving the interpretation of complex environmental data, regulatory submissions, and scientific risk communication. You’ll lead diverse projects across BC and Alberta, with particular focus on work involving First Nations communities, federal agencies, and private-sector clients.

In addition to technical project delivery, the Risk Assessor will be expected to support and guide junior and entry-level staff, and contribute to business development and marketing effort, including preparing proposals and work plans, delivering presentations, attending networking events and seminars, and fostering strong client relationships. An interest in growing your involvement in business development is considered a strong asset.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a subject matter expert supporting Indigenous clients in federal/provincial technical committees and environmental review processes.
  • Develop and communicate risk-based strategies for managing residual contamination, including natural attenuation, sub-slab depressurization, and long-term risk management plans.
  • Guide project scoping, regulatory engagement, proposal development, and cost estimation for HH/Eco RA-focused projects.
  • Mentor junior scientists in environmental risk assessment, toxicology, and environmental communication.
  • Contribute to scientific writing efforts including peer-reviewed literature, regulatory memos, and community-facing summaries.
  • Conduct and support human health and ecological risk assessments aligned with regulatory requirements in BC and Alberta.
  • Maintain and strengthen client relationships through regular communication, technical guidance, and high-quality deliverables.
  • Support and lead business development activities, including proposals, work plans, presentations, and networking events.
  • Contribute to internal process improvements, technical protocols, and team development.
  • Ability to participate in various types of environmental consulting projects as appropriate to the level of experience.
Job Requirements:
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Toxicology, Environmental Science, or related field .
  • Eligible for or registered with a professional designation (e.g., R.P.Bio., P.Geo., P.Ag., P.Eng., CSAP or QP RA).
  • 8+ years of experience with a strong focus on risk assessment for contaminated sites, brownfields, and federal properties.
  • Experience with natural resource sector projects (e.g., oil sands, fisheries) preferred but not required.
  • Strong understanding of federal and provincial environmental regulations, especially in British Columbia and Alberta.
  • Familiarity with exposure pathway modeling, risk quantification, and receptor-specific toxicity evaluations.
  • Proven ability to manage complex stakeholder interactions and client communications (e.g., Indigenous communities, regulators, and the public).
  • Previous experience with field methods such as borehole drilling, well installation, soil and groundwater sampling, and remediation technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects, teams, and budgets in a consulting environment.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Experience with work plan or proposal writing.
  • A collaborative spirit with a passion for mentorship and leadership.

  • Willingness to travel throughout BC and Alberta as needed.
  • A valid driver’s license.
